The Spirit of Sanctification. Sanctification of Human Life by the Spirit of God from the Perspective of Spiritual Theology

In this article, the author focuses on some anthropological consequences of the HolySpirit's action from the perspective of spiritual theology. She is interested in the question of what it means in the context of Christian spirituality that the Spirit sanctifieshuman life and leads people to holiness. The biblical experience, which is the focusof the first part of the study, shows that the very reference to being "sanctified" bythe Spirit of God implies not only His purifying action but also His empowermentto participate in the life of God. The second part of the text offers several examplesfrom the history of Catholic spirituality that show where and how the Spirit of Godis said to work in us. The last part of the text focuses on the theme of holiness and thesanctification of human life by the Spirit of God in Pope Francis' encyclical Gaudeteet exsultate, which, among other things, maps the pitfalls of a misunderstanding ofhuman cooperation with the Spirit's action, which gives way to various forms ofGnosticism and Pelagianism.
