Svazek dále obsahuje bibliografii, rejstřík biblických citací a dalších antických pramenů a věcný rejstřík.

Ambrose: Six Days of Creation
Popis výsledku anglicky
This volume investigates the homiletical commentary of Ambrose of Milan on the six days of creation as described in Genesis 1, the so-called Hexaemeron. This work, attributed to Ambrose, bishop of Milan at the end of the fourth century, constitutes an important testimony to the history of Christian exegesis of the first chapter of the Bible and to the preparation of catechumens for baptism during Holy Week before Easter. The first part of the book examines the character of Ambrose's Hexaemeron. It discusses the process of the work's composition and argues for a later date than the commonly accepted period of 386-390. The final redaction may have occurred significantly later than the original delivery, and it is possible to hypothesize that the Hexaemeron belongs to the final years of Ambrose's life, that is, the mid-390s. As the work comments extensively on the biblical text, the study analyses the sources of Ambrose's exegetical method, especially Philo and Origen as representatives of allegorical exegesis, which Ambrose frequently employs. This approach distinguishes his work from its principal model, the hexaemeral homilies of Basil of Caesarea, who favored a more literal exegesis in opposition to what he regarded as excessive allegorical interpretations of Genesis 1. The place of Ambrose's Hexaemeron within the broader history of the interpretation of Genesis-from Jewish exegesis to the Middle Ages-is also examined in order to demonstrate the role the work assumed over time. In this way, the commentary is shown to have played a crucial role in shaping the Latin understanding of Genesis 1 throughout the European medieval period, as evidenced by the large number of preserved manuscripts. The most innovative part of the study focuses on the role of Ambrose's Hexaemeron in pre-baptismal catechesis in Milan at the end of the fourth century. Various connections between Ambrose's text and the rites of the scrutinies celebrated during the Lenten period are identified, together with allusions to the baptismal rites that the audience would experience in the days to come. The Hexaemeron is interpreted as a means of establishing a new Christian culture that transcended traditional classical learning. Candidates for baptism were thus encouraged not only to renounce their former lives and assume the new life of Christ through baptism, but also to embrace the new Christian cultural framework promoted by the bishop. The central part of the volume consists of the Latin text of Ambrose's Hexaemeron, following the edition of K. Schenkl in the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum series (vol. 32/1), together with a Czech translation accompanied by an extensive commentary linked to the study presented in the first part of the book. This is the first complete translation of Ambrose's work on the six days of creation into Czech. The translation is intended to be of value to historians, art historians, theologians, philosophers, and other scholars. The commentary addresses a range of textual and interpretative issues, including intertextual references to other ancient authors. The volume concludes with a bibliography, indices of biblical quotations and other ancient sources, and a general index.
