Reform movements of alternative Catholicism among Poles and Czechs at the end of the 19th century and during the 20th century – an attempt at comparison
Popis výsledku anglicky
Although reform movements within the Roman Catholic Church at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century had similar roots in different states and linguistic communities, their development took entirely different paths. While the Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) in the United States, after initial radical organizational transformations and the influence of liberal thought, has to this day preserved classical structures (apostolic succession, Marian devotion) and for a long time was a member of the Union of Utrecht-through which it also obtained episcopal apostolic succession in 1907-the Czechoslovak (Hussite) Church followed a different course. On the one hand, in 1924 it rejected apostolic succession and, following the model of the old Unity of the Brethren, established its own priesthood; on the other hand-especially after the Second World War-it abandoned its original radical Catholic modernism and turned toward biblical personalism. Since 1946, women have also been ordained as priests. To date, no direct or indirect dialogue has ever taken place between the PNCC and the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, although the latter maintains contacts with some churches of the Union of Utrecht, particularly with the Old Catholic Church in the Czech Republic. The withdrawal of the PNCC from the Union of Utrecht in 2002 significantly complicated ecumenical dialogue among churches that emerged from reformed Catholicism.
