Maternal Mortality in South Africa
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This contribution is focused on maternal mortality in South Africa between 1997 and 2007. South Africa was one of the 189 countries that accepted Millennium Declaration in 2000 and therefore it pledged to fulfil eight goals stated in this document by 2015. One of these goals was to improve maternal health. However, maternal mortality is increasing in South Africa and it is partially because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. South Africa is considered to be one of the countries with the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world and therefore the contribution is partially focused on the impact of HIV/AIDS on maternal mortality. There are also other factors that contribute to the high level of maternal mortality in South Africa. On the basis of these factors theNational Committee on Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Death suggested improvements that could help South Africa to diminish maternal mortality and thus to bring South Africa closer to the fulfillment of this specific goal.
