The issue of sustainable development (hereinafter SD) has become an inseparable part of strategic development documents at national, regional and local levels in the last two decades. Not only the European Union (see Council of EU, 2006; European Commission, 2009, 2010), but also individual member states are trying to include SD aspects in practice. The team of authors of this contribution dealt with this issue in 2009 and 2010 within a scientific research project, using the Czech Republ ic (CR) as an example. In this project, attention was paid also to Local Agenda 21 (hereinafter LA21) representing a voluntary method of municipalities and regions implementing SD in practice.
