Introduction: Knowing What an Organism Is
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Agency can be defned through many concepts, and this book covers some of the most prominent ones. One possible way of understanding organismal agency is through the concept of adaptation. While traditional views of adaptation tend to emphasise the role of natural selection working on variation generated by random mutations in shaping the evolution of traits, the concept of organismal agency suggests that organisms are active participants in this process. It emphasises the concept of phenotypic plasticity, the principle of organisation, and reciprocal causality between the environment and the organism's setup. By actively seeking environmental cues, responding to them, and storing their experience with the environment, organisms can shape their evolutionary trajectories in ways that are diffcult to predict or explain in purely mechanistic terms.
