The gap between the desired and intended number of children – the case of Czechia

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

As with many other developed countries, Czechia has witnessed significant changes andincreasing differentiation in the life paths of younger generations. Despite recent higherfertility levels, new data indicates a decline in fertility and growing uncertainty about futuretrends. This study examines the factors contributing to variations in reproductive intentionsamong different demographic groups by analyzing the gap between desired and intendedfamily size. Using data from the Generation and Gender Survey (GGS-II, Wave I) for womenaged 18-39, logistic regression was employed. The model includes traditional socio-demographic variables and perceived uncertainty. The study found that age, number ofbiological children, current financial situation, perceived impact of Covid-19 on familyrelationships, and attendance at religious services significantly affect the likelihood of a gapbetween reproductive desires and intentions. This investigation is crucial as Czechia, likemany developed countries, has experienced a significant decline in fertility despite relativelyhigh desired fertility.
