Short-Term Fertility Intentions and Their Realization in Central Europe: A Comparative Analysis

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In the context of declining fertility rates in many developed countries, there is an increasing importance in understanding the formation and realization of reproductive intentions among young adults, as well as identifying barriers to their fulfilment. This study examines the relationship between short-term fertility intentions and their subsequent realization in four Central European countries (Czechia, Poland, Austria, and Germany). The analysis is based on data from the first and second waves of the Generations and Gender Survey, round I (GGS I) and includes respondents aged 18-39 at the time of the first wave who expressed an intention to have a child within the next three years. The primary objective of this study is not only to identify cross-national differences in the fulfilment of short-term fertility intentions but also to examine the factors influencing their realization. A significant contribution of this research is its consideration of not only individual characteristics and value orientations but also the role of existing children's ages in shaping reproductive intentions. While official statistics provide insights into the interval between the birth of the first and second child, this study offers a more nuanced perspective by exploring the process of fertility planning with a particular focus on sibling structure and age gaps. A further crucial aspect of this research is the assessment of the success of fertility intention realization depending on the time elapsed since the initial declaration.
