The effort to clarify and refine the terms used has accompanied the scientific community since time immemorial. In the field of museology, the International Committee for Museology – ICOFOM has been particularly interested in this issue. The result of these efforts is a large number of collected papers and several monographs, which are mainly based on the ideas originating from the francophone language area. The increased interest in defining, especially in the museum definition itself, can be traced back to before the ICOM General Conferences in Kyoto, Japan (2019) and in Prague (2022). The final output became the monumental Dictionary of Museology (Dictionnaire de muséologie), published in English and French, both edited by François Mairesse. The Dictionary resulted from several years of work of more than a hundred museologists from all over the world and contains one hundred main entries supplemented by hundreds of additional entries.
