Cratylus' Silence About Linguistic Correctness

This article tackles the longstanding interpretative puzzle of what the silence of Cratylus in Cratylus actually signifies. The author argues that Cratylus’ silence is meaningful — not a failure to respond, but a deliberate rhetorical move that conveys his view on the correctness of names. Through a careful analysis, the article suggests that Cratylus remains silent in imitation of a literary trope used to show rather than tell the significance of naming. The philosophical implication is that, for Cratylus, linguistic correctness is not primarily a matter of what is said (i.e., explicit naming), but of what is shown — the appropriateness of the name as understanding the relation between words and reality. In this way, the article reframes the traditional debate (naturalism vs. conventionalism) about correctness of names by highlighting silence itself as a semiotic act: truth and correctness lie not in statements but in the embodied, implicit relation between name and thing.
