Interface of Old English Dictionaries in Database Format: Toward a Knowledge Base
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Abstract The aim of this chapter is to design and implement the Interface of Old English dictionaries (IOED). The IOED is compiled, structured and exploited with database software, in such a way that each lemma or inflectional form is represented in a file with values for various types of lexical information. The IOED, therefore, constitutes a lexical database of Old English. The dictionaries inputted to the IOED include An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary, The student’s Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon, A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary and The Dictionary of Old English in Electronic Form A–I. The design of the IOED is aimed to comparability at type and token level. At type level, the interface relates a given headword of a dictionary to its counterparts in the other dictionaries, including those with different spelling and format. At token level, headwords across dictionaries are linked when they share inflectional forms from the same lexical category. The extended version of the IOED also allows for direct comparability with the most widely used corpora of Old English. The main conclusion is that graph representations in which relations are filed as data turn the lexical database into a knowledge base.
