Ageism In View of Paramedical Healthworkers at Departments of Gerontopsychiatry
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
All societies use age and sex to classify their members and they have different expectations of each category. The unrealistic classification on the basis of the age or sex is one of the biggest risks for the discrimination and prejudice in modern societies. Ageism could be defined as any prejudice or discrimination against or in favor of an age group. As a consequence there is negative stereotypes about that group (i.e., the belief that most of old people are senile) or negative attitude based on a stereotype (i.e., the feeling that old age is usually the worst time of life). Methods: A descriptive survey design was conducted within two regional gerontopsychiatric departments (in Brno and Kroměříž). We evaluated psychiatric paramedical healthcare professionals' (different job functions, excluding physicians) attitudes towards elderly people. The original questioner [27 entries] was used (some questions were prepared according to the Palmores questionnaire).
