Aussi évidente et répandue quelle soit, la notion de postmoderne est cependant loin dętre unanimement interprétée et aussi loin de se révéler comme un moyen utile pour commenter la littérature depuis les années 1980 jusquau début du XXe s. Cependant, expliquée par Jean-François Lyotard comme Ť ré-écriture de la modernité ť sous forme danamnčse, elle savčre suffisamment opérationnelle pour rendre compte de plusieurs tendances dans la littérature narrative contemporaine. Ainsi, le postmoderne chez Jean Echenoz représente un processus, plus analytique que critique, plus ludique quironique, qui met en scčnes quelques lieux communs du modernisme littéraire. De ce fait, certaines de ses dérives de la phase ultérieure (Tel Quel, Nouveau Roman nouveau NouveauRoman, etc.), dont en particulier lécriture spéculaire, métatextuelle, mais aussi lécriture des textes recyclant dautres textes ou genres mettent en marche une machine textuelle qui fait de nouveau jouer les éléments du récit.

Evident and wide-spread as it is, the notion of postmodern is nevertheless far from being unanimously interpreted, and also far from revealing itself as a useful means for commenting on the literature since the 1980s to the beginning of the XXth century.However, explained by Jean- François Lyotard as a way of re-writing of the modernity under the form of an anamnesis, the postmodern proves to be operational enough to give an account of several tendencies in the contemporary narrative literature.1 Thusthe postmodern of Jean Echenoz represents a process - more analytical than critical and more playful than ironic - staging several of the commonplaces of the literary modernism. In this way, some of his deviations of the ultimate phase (Tel Quel, NouveauRoman nouveau Nouveau Roman, etc.), namely the autoreflexive and metatextual writing, but also the writing of the texts recycling other texts or genres, start up a textual machine putting the narrative elements back into play.
