Die Diskussion über das Wesen der Metapher steht in der analytischen Philosophie hauptsächlich unter dem Einfluss von Arbeiten Max Blacks und Donald Davidsons. Ihre Querele betrifft vornehmlich die Problematik der metaphorischen Bedeutung. Black behauptet, dass der Begriff der metaphorischen Bedeutung notwendig sei, um die spezifische kognitive Kraft der Metapher zu beleuchten. Davidson leugnet das. Ganz im Einklang mit der aristotelischen Tradition werden in der Metapher für die Beschreibung eines Dinges Ausdrücke gebraucht, die normalerweise in einen anderen Bereich gehören. Eine unproblematische Bestimmung der Metapher, die beide Autoren zugestehen, besagt, dass in der Metapher etwas als etwas anderes gesehen wird. Diese Bestimmung der Metapher istaber selbst eine Metapher. Ludwig Wittgenstein hat die Wortverbindung "Sehen als" ausführlich diskutiert. Es wird gezeigt, wie diese Überlegungen von ihm auf das Verständnis der Metapher übertragen werden können.

The problem of metaphor has come to a noteworthy revival in the analytical philosophy. Despite all progress that was made, a majority of important studies con-clude by a likening of the function of metaphor to a visual perception. Such comparison may beconceived as a metaphor as well. In his late philosophy, Ludwig Wittgenstein has spent a lot of effort to explain the use of the expression "seeing as". I argue that his explanations can be transposed to the explanation of the function of metaphor. Firstly, it is shown that all earlier attempts to do that are not satisfying. The occurrence of the expression "to see as" in everyday language has led Wittgens-tein to the elaboration of the notion "aspect" and then to the outline of a remarkable conceptionof the fusion of looking and thinking. Primarily these ideas should be employed in order to explain metaphors in everyday or even poetic language.
