The paper presents innovative tendencies in Byzantine literature of the 12th century, focusing mostly on those for which analogies can be found in literary developments of the Latin West. Above all, the begging poetry will be examined as majority of theinnovative tendencies are reflected in its poems. My aim is to answer the question whether these parallels are accidental or whether their causes can be ascribed to an influence from one side or another.
