Avant de devenir une romanciere célebre, Gabrielle Roy (1909-1983) a publié une série de six reportages consacrés aux communautés immigrées du Manitoba et de la Saskatchewan (Bulletin des agriculteurs, 1942-1943). L'article tente d'établir un lien entrecette thématique et les faits biographiques. Issue de la minorité franco-manitobaine, menacée par l'anglicisation, Roy cherche a résoudre une situation contradictoire: si la communauté franco-manitobaine forme une sorte de protection identitaire, elle est également un ghetto culturel qui nie l'individualité. La culture anglaise lui montre la voie a la fois de la libération et de l'écriture en français. C'est aussi le moyen qui lui permet de se réconcilier avec ses origines et rejoindre sa communauté francophone a travers le theme des autres minorités. L'écriture devient une distanciation et une reconnaissance a la fois. Cette attitude, qui apparaît pour la premiere fois dans les reportages, se retrouve dans ses romans et récits ultérieu

Before she became known as a novelist, Gabrielle Roy (1909-1983) published a series of six reports devoted to some of Manitoba's and Saskatchewan's immigrant communities (Bulletin des agriculteurs, 1942-43). The paper attempts to establish a link betweenthis immigrant orientated topic and several biographical facts. Descending from the Franco-Manitoban minority, subject to anglicization, Roy seeks to resolve a contradictory situation: if community means protection, it is also a cultural "ghetto" that denies individuality. The English milieu and culture show her the way both to liberation and writing in French. It is also the medium that allows her to reconcile with her origins and join her Francophone community through the theme of other minorities. Writing becomes a distancing and recognizing at a time. This attitude, which appears for the first time in her reports, can be found in her later novels and short stories
