The essay is a part of the book written in honor of Karl F. Morrison, who was one of the first scholars interested in the question of empathy during the Medieval Ages. Kessler's essay studies the famous image from the Prayer Book of Charles the Bald, in which he examines the visual "reciprocity" between the Charles' worshipful form and Christ's crucified corpus, as well as between the serpentine body position of crucified Christ and the body of the twisted snake curled at the foot of the cross. The study provides an exciting new explanation for the medieval images, in which Christ's crucified body was portrayed as the visual reflection of the "sanctifying serpent" which serves as "an antidote to the poison of original sin" embodied in the snake at the foot of the cross.
