From Folk Culture to Pop-Culture. Searching for the matter of research in the Czech ethnology of the 20th century
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Czech researchers started dealing with the folk art study as late as after the World War I and the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic. They understood the expressions of folk visual culture as a pendant to professional art. After the World War II, the social situation changed and similar artefacts were not made spontaneously any more, but mostly within an organized production under the auspices of governmental institutions. Folk art often manifested itself in the form of kitsch and through production of articles made by handymen or women as hobby in their leisure time, or by soldiers in military service. Such products could not be considered "art"; for this reason, the ethnologists did not pay attention to them and the contemporary visual expressions stopped being the matter of their interest. Yet it is not possible to forget that they are a part or mass of pop culture.
