A un secolo dalla prima edizione russa questo volume presenta la prima parte – ed e' una novita' assoluta per il lettore occidentale – di uno dei piu' importanti scritti russi del primo Novecento. Opera di Nikodim P. Kondakov, l’Iconografia della Madre di Dio e' un vero e proprio documento della storia del pensiero russo pre-rivoluzionario sull’arte sacra. Con una prospettiva positivista, e con un’ampiezza di orizzonti impressionante, Kondakov ci racconta la storia del culto mariano e delle sue testimonianze figurative tra Oriente e Occidente nel primo millennio della storia cristiana. Tra le righe del testo possiamo pero' leggere la storia dell’impero degli Zar che – inconsapevole di quanto lo avrebbe atteso solo pochi anni piu' tardi – cerca e definisce la propria identita' culturale e la propria missione storica.

A century after the first Russian edition, this volume presents the first part - and this is a first for the Western reader - of one the most important writings of the early twentieth century in Russia. Work of Nikodim P. Kondakov, the Iconography of the Mother of God is a true document about the studies on sacred art in the history of pre-revolutionary Russia. With a positivist perspective, and with an impressive amplitude of horizons, Kondakov tells the story of the Marian cult and its figurative evidences between East and West in the first millennium of Christian history. Between the lines of the text, however, we can read the history of the empire of the Tsars who - unaware of what he would live just a few years later - search to define its cultural identity and its historical mission. This edition want therefore to present the contemporary reader the thought of the great Kondakov, while giving him the tools to understand his cultural background.
