This essay responses to Jeffrey F. Hamburger’s study „St. John the Divine. The Deified Evangelist in Medieval Art and Theory“ and pays attention to the visual representations of the youngest evangelist, as well as his gospel in manuscripts or artistic works. The main body of the text is focused on explanation of the christomorphic representations of St. John in the Weingarten Gospels illuminated at St. Martin’s Tours (ca. 830). Herbert L. Kessler also operates with many citations from different writings, sources and comments, for example from st. Augustine, Sedulius, Bede, Alcuin, Abbot Suger, Beatus of Liebana or from documents like the Carmen paschale, book of Kells, first Bible of Charles the Bald, Codex Aureus of St. Emmeram, Grimbald Gospel or Odbert Gospels and Auxerre leaves. Their records about st. John’s medieval representation in illuminations and artistic works are indispensable for Kessler’s explanation of the St. John’s image in the Weingarten Gospels.
