Focusing on churches built during the reign of Justinian I (527-565), and more specifically on San Vitale in Ravenna, the present paper evinces the manner in which the perception of these spaces was manipulated by their designers. Dumbfounding the onlooker’s senses through a careful combi-nation of architecture, decoration, iconography, and lighting, designers of Justinianic churches reproduced the atmosphere of heaven, altering the perception of the ritual’s and its mise-en-scene’s materiality.
