One feature that helps to create the complex image of his world of Middle-earth can also be the poetry included in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. In this presentation, the main focus is on the poetry in Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings (particularly in The Fellowship of the Ring since the number of poems and songs is the highest out of the entire trilogy). In order to introduce the topic to the reader J. R. R. Tolkien himself is briefly introduced, followed by the reference to the poems in general, their position in the story and the types of poems (from the point of function, not meter). Also, later on the main attention is paid to the function of his poems in the trilogy and the purpose of its presence in Tolkien’s world along with the way how it was passed down in Middle-earth. Furthermore, since there are various races to be found in The Fellowship of the Ring who utter the songs and poems another goal would be to present the topics and the language of the poems depending on the races of Middle-earth and poetry specifics of each race.
