Four hydronyms from East Balticum mediated by Ptolemy in the mid-2nd cent. CE and repeated with certain modifications by Marcian in the 4th cent. CE look as Germanic calques on the primary Baltic river-names, probably with one exception, Rhúbo:n, allowing the direct Baltic etymology based on Latvian rubenis "grouse" and its identification with the Irbe River of the same sense. The Khrónos &amp; Chronius River was probably called after the Mare Cronium, perhaps corresponding with one of the Vistula or Curonian Lagoons or their tributaries, Pregel, 1273 Pregora, or Akmena respectively.
