After the annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire, the first studies about the history of the region appears. They were celebrating the spiritual unity between Russia and Georgia... . Most interesting was certainly the work of Grigory Gagarin, who presented this unity trough the architecture. In his view Georgian art was part of the same cultural space, as the art of Byzantium, but also the Russian one.
