Relationship between parental involvement in sport and the level of overtraining in adolescent elite ice hockey players

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The objectives of this study are to map the level of overtraining in Czech adolescent elite ice hockey male players and to examine possible relationships between selected types of parental involvement in sport and the level of overtraining in their children. The research sample included 104 ice hockey male players aged 10 to 19 (M=15.05, SD=2.38) competing only on an international or national level. The Profile of Mood States questionnaire (POMS) was used to indicate the level of overtraining. The Parental Involvement in Sport Questionnaire (PISQ) which measures perceptions of mother‘s and father‘s Active Involvement (AI), Praise and Understanding (PU), Directive Behaviour (DB), and Pressure (PR) was used to assess the nature of parental involvement. The results suggest that our research sample does not report significant mood disturbance level which is associated with the psychological consequences of overtraining, however, increased rate of scales D (depression), A (anger) and F (fatigue) were found. The results of the relationships between the types of parental involvement in sport and the level of overtraining in their children suggest negative correlation for PU (Praise and Understanding) of both parents. These findings can be used for further research in this area and might be applied in practice by further cooperation with parents, players and coaches as an improvement in the prevention of overtraining.
