First steps of the underwater cultural heritage protection in the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Hundreds of sites connected to the water are recorded in the Czech Republic. Most of them were discovered during the 20th century by regulation of the rivers and dams. The area of research has not been focused on underwater sites in the past, although we know rare underwater research in connection with rescue archaeological research. Since the 21st century, underwater archeology has become more attractive and underwater finds are being systematically processed. With the development of diving techniques, underwater sites have been more accessible in dark and cold water in the Czech Republic. For this reason, working groups or individuals with an interest in underwater archaeology have begun to appear. Nowadays, emphasis is placed also on the protection of underwater sites. In the past, cultural heritage protection was exclusively based only on terrestrial archaeological sites in the Czech Republic. The aim of the paper focuses on significant underwater finds and sites and on the gradual development of underwater archeology in the Czech Republic.
