When Altai Uriankhais subdued to the Qing Empire, they were reorganized into two wings and seven banners, each presided by one general director (bügüde-yin daruγ-a, uheri da). Even though in the normal practice of the Qing administrative system, the function of the general director was elective and non-hereditary, among Altai Uriankhais the function was transmitted in clans usually derived from the pre-Qing zaisang-chiefs of the Dzunghar period. The oral tradition of Altai Uriankhais testifies to a deep-rooted notion that the banner's head must come from a “white bone”, that is, from a noble clan. Despite the hereditariness of the function, records of noble clans of Altai Uriankhais have never been incorporated into the official genealogies Wai fan Menggu Hui bu wang gong biao zhuan (Iledkel šastir) edited by the imperial court throughout the later Qing. As a result, the names and sequences of the rulers of five of the seven banners were forgotten. This article reconstructs the successions of rulers of these five banners of Altai Uriankhais based on sources from the First Historical Archives of China and the National Archives of Mongolia.
