Czech Animation Art Worlds Under State Socialism – The Case of Gottwaldov Film Studios

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This paper presents the results of an ethnographic investigation of the different, overlapping art worlds that coexist in the studios. Inspired by the sociology of art, particularly Howard S. Becker's concept of the art world and Nick Crossley's concept of social networks, the milieu of the studios is presented as a space of collaboration, coordination, personal alliances, patronage, and artistic and career strategies employed by members of the coexisting and intersecting art worlds. In the absence of an institute that offered training in animation, they had to learn the conventions of the art primarily by shadowing their experienced colleagues. Because of the small town's long tradition of film production and its location on the cultural periphery, many of the talents and crafts were relatives, schoolmates, or friends before they came to the studios-a fact that made the network analysis of the social worlds even more effective and meaningful than it would be for a studio in a metropolitan area. Extensive archival research and dozens of interviews provide insights into the art worlds of shared conventions as well as the social worlds that formed around the sites and spaces of collaborative work.
