Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future : Curating the Vasulka Live Archive on the Remnants of Video Art
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
First part (main speaker Jana Horakova): The presentation will delve into the process of curating the Vasulka Live Archive, with emphasis on innovative ways of applying the concept of ´live archive´ on the digital (and digitalized) archive of the Vasulkas while engaging artificial intelligence (machine learning method) to design epistemological tool for “augmented iconology” (Emily l. Spratt) of artistic videos. The project is situated in the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities, specifically within the subset of projects focusing on animating archives with the help of computer technology. The methodological and conceptual backgrounds of the project will be discussed, and the rationale behind decisions made during the process of designing the database, website, and its interfaces will be clarified. Subsequently, the process of developing an intelligent tool (one for visual signs analysis and another for audio signs analysis) will be described. To illustrate how this epistemological tool can be used in the analysis of artistic videos, some examples of its application will be shown and results evaluated. The general argument of the presentation should lead towards justification of an artificial intelligence application in curating digital databases of artworks and to point towards establishment of a new field within the digital humanities named "augmented iconology" [Emily L. Spratt]. This claim will be supported by the outcomes of the Vasulka Live Archive (vasulkalivearchive.net) project which, as we believe, contribute not only to the preservation of the historical media art, but also actively connects the work of the Vasulkas with the present and the future of media art, creating a living resource for scholars, artists and art enthusiasts interested in investigation of new media art. // Secon part (main speaker Štěpán Miklánek): The presentation will describe the technical details and challenges of implementing an application for a digital exhibition of Woody and Steina Vasulka's artwork. The application will be described in terms of design and user interface for deploying virtual reality in exhibition spaces. The presentation will be accompanied by a demonstration of the Vasulka Live Archive version for virtual reality, which conference participants will be able to test for themselves.
