Der Autor hebt die Rolle des Holzes für viele Bereiche menschlicher Aktivitäten im Mittelalter hervor. Dies hängt natürlich auch mit dem Handel und Transport von Holz zusammen, wofür vorzugsweise Wasserläufe genutzt wurden. Anhand von zwei Quellen, nämlich einer Visitation der Johanniterkommenden in der Prager Erzdiözese aus dem Jahr 1373 und einem Torso der Rechnungen desselben Ordenshauses aus den 1380er Jahren, zeigt er die Mechanismen dieser Tätigkeiten auf, die unter der Leitung der Prager Kommende ausgeübt wurden. Für die Prager Johanniter war die Enklave im Süden flussaufwärts der Moldau wichtig, wo sie mehrere Dörfer sowie die angrenzenden Wälder besaßen. Das Zentrum bildete das Gehöft in Varvažov, dessen Verwalter einer der ritterlichen Mitglieder des Prager Konvents war. Die Schifffahrt des zu Flößen zusammengestellten Holzes wurde hauptsächlich von den Leibeigenen aus Varvažov, Nevězice und Zbonín durchgeführt, die nur mit geringen finanziellen Beiträgen belastet waren. Bei einem Preis von 12-32 Prager Groschen für ein Floß konnte der Orden jährlich fast 100 Schock einnehmen, die je zur Hälfte zwischen dem Prager Komtur und dem Verwalter aus Varvažov aufgeteilt wurden. Die Zeugen des Ordens, Komtur Pesslin und Prior Nikolaus, erwähnten den Holzhandel in ihrer Visitation jedoch mit keinem Wort.

The author emphasizes the role of wood for many areas of human activity in the Middle Ages. Of course, this is also connected with the timber trade and its transport, for which watercourses were primarily used. On the basis of two sources, namely a visitation of the Hospitaller commanderies in the Prague archdiocese from 1373 and a torso of the accounts of the same religious house from the 1380s, he shows the mechanisms of these activities, which were carried out under the direction of the Prague commanderies. For the Prague Hospitaller, the enclave to the south upstream of the Vltava River was important, where they owned several villages as well as adjacent forests. The centre was the farmstead (curia) in Varvažov, whose administrator was one of the knightly members of the Prague Convent. The sailing of the timber assembled into rafts was carried out mainly by the serfs from Varvažov, Nevězice and Zbonín, who were burdened with only small financial contributions. With the price of one raft between 12-32 Prague groats, the Order was able to earn almost 100 three-scores annually, which was divided in half between the Prague Commander and the administrator from Varvazov. However, the order's witnesses, Commander Pesslin and Prior Nicholas, did not mention the timber trade at all in their visitation.
