Early medieval non-standard settlement graves : what they can or cannot tell us about the social status of a buried person?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In early medieval regular cemeteries or funerary areas within settlement structures, individuals buried outside the standard burial rites are almost regularly found. Burial in a non-standard position, as we understand it, is the placement of the body on its side with varying degree of crouching or the prone position. The body orientation towards the cardinal points plays a secondary role. The percentage of non-standard burials ranges from 1% to 13%. These are mostly found in dispersed burial grounds within settlements. Revealing the reasons why a section of the early medieval population was denied standard burial rites has been the subject of several generations of archaeologists, and no one answer has yet been agreed upon. Approximately 3.5% of the 1042 inhumation graves discovered at the site of Břeclav-Pohansko matched these characteristics (as of 2020). What was the social status of these people? We try to answer this question by a detailed study of graves based on selected characteristics: spatial location of the grave, position of the body, age and sex of the individual buried, presence of grave goods and the health of the individual.
