Multidisciplinary archaeological research and monument restoration at the Pernštejn Castle ornamental garden grounds (Czech Republic)

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The garden grounds at the medieval Pernštejn Castle were founded in the baroque style in the eighteenth century and extended in Anglo-Chinese style at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but until recently they were in a state of disrepair. Comprehensive archaeological research has been an integral part of their restoration, aiming to gather information about the appearance and layout of the garden. Investigation has ranged from non-destructive geophysical survey by ground-penetrating radar through targeted trial trenches, to more extensive excavation. The results have contributed to the restoration efforts, helping to discern the original layout of the garden’s flat areas. The findings have had a substantial impact on the intended appearance of the grounds as projected at the initial stages of restoration. Subsequent archaeological research, carried out simultaneously with the construction works, has confirmed the validity of the initial conjectures about the layout of the garden and provided additional details about its past appearance and chronological development. In the end, the restoration has been successful, not only preserving a vital piece of cultural heritage but also creating a beautiful historical space for the public to enjoy.
