Police and Justice Cooperation in Criminal Matters, which forms nowadays the Third Pillar of the European Union has a specific nature, compared to the other pillars. Nevertheless, not mentioning the expected repeal of the pillar structure by the Lisbon Treaty, the future of which is to the date unclear, also in present days we can observe some very interesting developments in this pillar. There are legislative proposals on the subject matter falling within the remit of the Third pillar, but they also mean a very substantial interference to the intergovernmental character of this pillar; being it the Proposal for a Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law and the Proposal for a Directive cross-boarder enforcement in the fieldof road safety.
