The Process of Joining the European Union: From Aspiration to Full Membership
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The debate on further enlargement is as old as the European Union itself. After half a century of existence, what started as a club of 6 is now home to 27 states and nearly 500 million people. The idea of uniting the European continent politically, economically, socially and culturally is closer to becoming a reality. There are currently 9 potential candidate states with a prospect of becoming EU member states in the foreseeable future. This article deals with the formal process of joining the EuropeanUnion. First of all, it presents and defines the accession criteria that must be met before a country can be considered eligible for membership. Secondly, it describes the procedure for submission of a membership application and explains the role of theEU institutions when assessing the possibility of granting a candidate status to an applicant country. Thirdly, the process of accession negotiations, which leads to signing of the accession treaty and full EU membership, is explicated.
