Trust in adolescence: Cultural, social, and interpersonal context

The concept of trust is essential to humanity and therefore, it underlies many contexts and domains of individual and social life. If the basic sense of trust establishes the ground for mutuality during early childhood, then a period of adolescence is important time of anchoring the trust based on knowledge and conscious experiences. Our presentation is based on data from several studies. At first, we inform about cultural differences: how the concept of trust is represented in the mind of adolescents in several European countries (Czech republic, France, Scotland). We explain that the meaning of trust of Czechs seems to be strongly rooted in close interpersonal relationships, in emotional dimension, in feelings of mutuality and in feelings of similarity. This concept of trust is semantically near to the concepts of certainty and equality. It leads to an idea, that trust is more based on feelings of similarity to others.
