Das Buch befasst sich mit den spezifischen Formen des Kulturkampfes in Böhmen und Mähren und charakterisiert die geistigen Fundamente des antiklerikalen Kampfes in den einzelnen ideologischen Gruppen. Berücksichtigung finden darüber hinaus Fragen, die die grundlegenden Themen dieses Kampfes berühren – die Auseinandersetzungen um den Charakter der Schulen sowie weiterer einflussreicher Institutionen. Konkrete Teilstudien analysieren den Glaubenskampf in ausgewählten Städten und Dörfern. Den komparativen Akzent der vorliegenden Monographie betonen die der Entwicklung des Antiklerikalismus in den tschechischen Gründungen im Ausland gewidmeten Passagen.

The authors understand anti-clericalism as part of the European processes of modernization, which wer accompanied by the building of the European nation states and their political institutions. Anticlericalism is the part of the "ambivalence of modernity", which is characterized by a clash of identities and the transformation of mentalities and life orientations. There are four main topics solved in the book - the idea of anti-clericalism, the mobilizational topics, the micro-historical view, the anti-clericalism in expatriate communities.
