En s'appuyant sur des données multisites, ce chapitre explore certaines caractéristiques et paradoxes sociopolitiques de l'autostop. Il le fait à travers de l'auto-ethnographie et l’analyse comparative de récits historique et littéraire. La pratique de l'autostop (le hitchhiking en anglais et trampen en allemand) évoque des significations anthropologique, historiographique et imaginative, représentant en Europe une forme particulière de mobilité en vertu de laquelle les trajets sont librement élaborés. Les auto-stoppeurs sont marginaux dans le sens où ils s’approprient différentes dimensions des réseaux automobilistes, sans pour autant cautionner l'idéologie des transports de masse. Par son caractère temporel, l'autostop devient un acte liminaire, anti-structurel et péri-urbain. En effet, ce type de déplacement présente des caractéristiques révélatrices sur les non-lieux, la fluidité des frontières et l'apatride - tout en étant une forme complexe et multimodale d’un déplacement « carporel ».

Relying on multi-sited data, this chapter explores some of the socio-political characteristics and paradoxes of hitchhiking. It does so through autoethnography and the comparative analysis of historical and literary narratives. The practice of hitchhiking evokes anthropological, historiographical and imaginative meanings, representing in Europe a particular form of mobility in which journeys are freely constructed. Hitchhikers are marginal in the sense that they appropriate different dimensions of motoring networks, without endorsing the ideology of mass transport. By its temporal character, hitchhiking becomes a liminal, anti-structural and peri-urban act. Indeed, this type of displacement has revealing characteristics about non-places, border fluidity and statelessness -- whilst being a complex, multimodal form of 'corporal/carporal' displacement.
