The chapter analyses how parental imprisonment transforms parenting across the domains of care, upbringing and material support. Drawing on quantitative data from the Parenting Behind Bars study and on attachment theory and capability-based approaches to child well-being, it demonstrates a marked imbalance between a relatively preserved relational dimension of parenting (contact, trust, emotional support) and a severely impaired dimension of upbringing and protection. Long-term separation and institutional barriers prevent parents from exercising everyday parental authority, which distorts parental identity and undermines children’s identity formation. The chapter concludes with recommendations for structured support to incarcerated parents that maintains emotional bonds while strengthening parental authority within the constraints of prison settings.
