European Integration : A Critical Juncture for Czech Politics
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In this article, we claim that the achievement of EU membership in May 2004 constituted a new critical juncture in Czech, and more generally Central European, politics. The analysis deals mainly but not exclusively with the changing patterns of party politics and interparty competition and changing political rhetoric vis-à-vis the European Union in the last one-and-a-half decades. Political parties and their leaders are active agents in creating critical junctures. On the basis of previous research on Czech politics, party, politics, and Euroscepticism, we summarize the new "European" critical juncture in post-2004 Czech politics. The articles argue that there are clear elements of continuity with pre-2004 politics in the sphere of political discourse. At the same time, the new critical juncture has affected Czech party politics and the general position of the country toward the EU in a new way, which might undermine Czechia's pragmatic, basic pro-European position in the context of the recent profound crisis.
