Fourteen sampling sites belonging to four stream zones (epirhithral, metarhithral, hyporhithral, epipotamal) of the Hron River were investigated. At each site, geomorphological, physical (using the River Habitat Survey), chemical and biological data werecollected. In 2003 and 2004, macroinvertebrates were collected in two-month intervals with the exception of three winter months; the River Habitat Survey was carried out during summer 2003 and 2004. A total of 1759 individuals representing 8 Odonata taxa, 3 Heteroptera taxa and 25 Diptera (excl. Chironomidae, Simuliidae) taxa were collected, some of them are endangered (Aphelocheirus aestivalis, Heteroptera; Atherix ibis, Diptera) or vulnerable (Onychogomphus forcipatus, Odonata) in Europe. These species are mostly limited to the lowland part of the Hron River.
