Aggregation of Compounds on Ice Surfaces Studied by Luminescence
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Pollutants of a natural or anthropogenic origin can be found on the surfaces of ice and snow. Most of the compounds are expelled from the bulk to the ice surface upon freezing causing substantial increase in their local concentrations. Thermal and especially photochemical reactions cause formation of various cross products of high toxicity. We have a long standing interest in the spectroscopic characterization of the ice contaminants and the ice surface molecules. In order to approach lower concentrations corresponding to the natural conditions we decided to use optical spectroscopy to measure luminescence of pyrenetetrasulfonate ion. It is a water soluble probe with a characteristic monomer and excimer fluorescence. The monomer is present in water solution at concentration 10-5 mol.dm-3, while only the excimer exists in frozen solutions as can be seen from the picture below. Initial results of this study are the subject of this poster.
