First observations on agamococcidian Rhytidocystis sp. from White Sea polychaete Travisia forbesii

Agamococcidia is a small, poorly investigated group of Apicomplexa, with unusual life cycle lacking gametogony and merogony, and inhabiting intestine of marine polychaetes. The genus Rhytidocystis has been originally established by Henneguy for intestinal parasite of Ophelia bicornis. Here we present the first observation of Rhytidocystis sp. from Travisia forbesi . Developmental stages of parasite appeared as white dots of uncertain shape, but after separation form host tissue they became oval. The surface of free trophozoites is covered by groups of very short folds, with numerous micropores located in between individual folds and on their tops. Intracellular trophozoites possess typical apicomplexan pellicle. Their cytoplasm, lined at the peripherywith large mitochondria, is filled with numerous organelles and inclusions. We assume that parasite found in Travisia forbesi is a new species and propose a name, Rhythidocystis travisiae n.sp.(Agamococcidia: Rhythidiocystidae).
