As robots become integrated into work and home environments, concerns are emerging how to make them engage and communicate with humans more effectively. This, in turn, contributes to hesitance in certain segments of society towards accepting robots. Besides the technical features, making robots successful in different situations depends on understanding the social and psychological factors that affect how people see and interact with these machines. The integration of both viewpoints, which is crucial for coming up with plans that improve not only the technical skills of robots but also how people accept and use them in different parts of society, has stimulated a boost in the research on robot acceptance across numerous domains, with a great opportunity of mutual knowledge exchange between them. In this work, we conduct a systematic literature review on robot acceptance by humans, considering social factors such as trust. We explore the acceptance models employed in managing human-robot relationships, identify the key domains studying robot acceptance, and investigate the strategies and levels for effective robot integration into society. The key finding of the study, consistent across the examined domains, is that the success of robot acceptance stands on the quality of the underlying trust-building process, leveraging psychological processes of how humans form beliefs and act in social dynamics, with specific factors outlined as part of the study. Unlike other studies, we go beyond human-robot interaction mechanisms and delve into human-robot acceptance with its social nuances, contributing to knowledge exchange in this emerging field.
