Referendum as one of the possibilities of inhabitant´s participation in public affairs after 1989 (case study)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In addition to municipal elections, another referendum is another option for citizens to take part in public affairs. A referendum is a vote by which voters decide to accept or reject a submitted proposal. This form of voting has been used several times since the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993, but only one referendum was successful, when the inhabitants had to decide on joining to the EU. In this paper, we evaluate the participation of citizens in the administration of public affairs through their participation in referendums in Slovak Republic. The basis for the analysis were the data of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic for individual referendums held in the Slovak Republic. The analysis showed that the only successful referendum was a referendum in which the inhabitants decided on Slovakia's accession to the EU in 2003. Although the other 7 referendums were unsuccessful due to the number of participants, positive voting prevailed in all referendums.
