History, Iconography and Significance of the Renaissance Garden in Telč
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper presents new findings on the iconographic programme and meaning of rather fragmental preserved renaissance garden situated at the palace of Telč - Moravian residence of the lords of Hradec, who were important members of the Czech nobility. The garden was built in 70’s of 16th century for Zacharias of Hradec (1527–1589), art patron and politician, who served as the Moravian Landeshauptmann. The garden surrounds the burial chapel of Zacharias of Hradec and his family, inside decorated with rich stucco decorations depicting the Last Judgement and other themes. Apart from the chapel the garden contents fragments of numerous decorations: only statues of Adam and Eve, relief of Pluto, coat of arms of the emperor Maximilian II. and a few fragments of painted Habsburgs’ emblems have been preserved. Newly found and interpreted written sources indicate, that painted emblems originally accompanied life-size statues of members of the house of Habsburg and that there were other decorations like water elements and sculptures of water deities. The iconographic programme of the garden combined Christian element (the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve) with ancient mythology (Pluto, tritons) and the outstanding celebration of governing family. The connection of these elements creates remarkable image representing the patron’s thought including religiosity, interest in ancient world and loyalty to the sovereign dynasty. The place of the patron’s burial is surrounded by this “renaissance paradise”.
