This article originated as a conference adress at the Conference of the Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) convened at Texas AM University (College-Station) in June 2009. The author explanes how did it happend that a major silver currency of 16th centurywas named "thaler" after a particular Bohemian coin (when similar coins were already previously being produced in neighboring Austria and Germany), and how did this term, originally meant to designate a coin from Bohemian Mint in Jáchymov, appear in North America, particularly when the previous currency used there was the peso (the Mexican silver coin valued at 8 reales).
