The Czechoslovak Political Prisoners: The Return to Society
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article contributes to the historiography of the totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia and its political prisoners. The replacement of existing society with a "perfect society" in communist Czechoslovakia produced about 250, 000 political prisoners. Most of them were jailed in the years 1948-1960, when the Stalinist oppression was at its strongest. This paper analyses the subjective experience of prisoners returning back using interviews made in the last three years. Most of the victims of Stalinism were conditionally released in the years 1960-1962 and even for these people communism was not a monolithic experience and they had to live their "normal" life in any conditions. Using oral history methods, this paper explores how they perceived theirexistence after being released from prison. How they lived their "average" lives and whether they reached rehabilitation, educational and career goals instead of being politically oppressed as the state's enemies.
