Das Problem der Musik und des Musikalischen wird im Rahmen der deutschen Literatur besonders um 1800 zum Thema einer heftigen Diskussion. Dabei darf nicht die damalige Musikästhetik ausgeschlossen werden, der erwähnten Thematik ist jedoch auch der soziologische Aspekt kaum abzusagen. Zu dieser Zeit werden fiktive Biografien verfasst, die auf das wachsende Interesse für Musik und Musiker hinweisen. Der fast vergessene Gulden-Roman von Johann Friedrich Reichardt gewährt umfangreiches literaturwissenschaftliches Material zur Untersuchung des Phänomens der Kunst und des Künstlertums. Anhand zwei entgegensetzten fiktiven Biografien wird dargestellt, wie widerspruchsvoll die Position der Musik und des Musikers in der damaligen Gesellschaft war.

Music and a musician's life are the main themes of Reichardt`s novel Leben des berühmten Tonküstlers Heinrich Wilhelm Gulden. This novel, if we take no account of numerous formal shortcomings, becomes the source of knowledge for understanding estheticaltransformations in the field of music before the year 1800. The inseparable part is their putting into the contextual perception of art and an artist in the then society. By using the technique of the opposites of two fictional artists` biographies, theauthor attempts to portray a real image of an artist's life in comparison to the ideal conception of art and an artist's status in the society.
