Końcem XIX w. w całej Europie małżeństwo uważane było za najlepszą możliwą drogę życiową kobiety. Jednak wiedza, z jaką młoda kobieta stawała na ślubnym kobiercu znacząco odbiegała od tego, co obecnie zwykliśmy uważać za standard. Nie wynikała to jednak wyłącznie z niższego stanu świadomości medycznej, a przeciwnie – za główną przyczynę uznać można pobudki kulturowe. Chcąc przeanalizować literackie dane na temat stanu (nie)wiedzy młodych kobiet na temat życia małżeńskiego przed pierwszą wojną światową, sięgnę po historie opisane w powieściach Gabrieli Zapolskiej, Zofi i Nałkowskiej i Boženy Vikovej -Kunětickiej.

During the period of Fin De Siècle most important life goals of young women were to marry a man and to become a good wife and mother. On the other hand Bourgeoisie morality excluded young ladies from any preparations to family life and carnality. As a consequence young brides were not aware of what is the essence of matrimony life which was one of the most necessary compounds of maternity. Young ladies were therefore not aware of any dangers which might appear in their marital life. The only source of information included books, mostly romances written by men as well as various information gathered from maids and unprepared and uneducated in this area school maids. During this time women’s marital life was becoming one of the biggest lifelong disappointments. Men were often using services of prostitutes and, as a consequence they were infecting young and vulnerable girls which, as a result were unable to conceive or could even die.
