This chapter contests the widespread idea of one large anti-caste and especially anti-brahmanical movement in Indian history. After critical analyses of the arguments presented for thsi &quot;unidted anti-caste&quot; hypothesis, author offers arguments for the conclusion that both early ascetic traditions and later bhakti movements upheld brahmanas and considered varna-dharma to be the best form of society. Second part of the chapter shows how religious explanation of caste as an endogamous unit has its roots in the Early Modern encounters between Portuguese colonisers and Indian society. In the following centuries, what was originally specific Christian concept of purity of blood acquired status of a neutral explanation.
